Here’s your chance to check out established artists with new hip-hop treats from each one. What’s impressive about the disc is the way it can bring a compilation of multiple artists yet boast such stylistic solidarity. Which isn’t to say this all runs on like a bunch of indistinguishable artists, but rather that the artists and tracks simply play so well with one another, so to speak, that this is a cohesive whole rather than a stitched-together Frankenstein. One notable theme that seems to run through many of the tracks is that the beats and sampled music have a certain laid back flavor to them, rather than being tremendously aggro. This is anything but crunk, let me tell you. Jazz, funk and other chilled melodies are represented in the sampling and the beats create a luscious groove to kick it to. Another positive aspect of the track listing is that the way they’re ordered, the tunes do, in fact, build to an energy peak (though without becoming fist-in-the-face). And as for aggression, it’s not that it doesn’t exist here, but the attitude finds its expression in the lyrical content. This isn’t wussy rap, it just knows how to speak quietly and carry a big stick. The Grouch’s “Artsy” is a unique, lush hip-hop number to give heed to if you want an idea what kind of talent is here.
