While there may be no trailblazing afoot here, Pabon does bring in a slow build that gradually hooks you in. Granted, it takes a little patience and it’s roughly a third of the way into the disc before you realize you’re more or less hooked, but it does get to you eventually. Pabon has plenty to say, from friendly to aggressive, matching his tone and delivery to the material at hand. There’s plenty in the way of in-your-face aggro hip-hop to be found here, but the artist is equally able to pull things back a bit and deliver some chilled out work. Interestingly, Pabon is at his best on either end of the spectrum, either super energetic and rippin’ right through it or kickin’ back with some downtempo grooves and super duper chillin’ atmosphere. I suppose you could say that Pabon’s album is something of a progressive work, with the build through the early tracks part of the process of bringing the listener into Louder Than Fiction’s aesthetic. It may be a flawed work overall, but flawed doesn’t mean bad or unsuccessful. Momentum does show up and when it does, it works nicely. The disc may start off a bit uncertainly but by the time it was really grinding away (“Pa Fuera” is where the disc really starts to shine and is a great track to sample if you want to check out the high energy side of Pabon’s work) it definitely had shown itself something to get the groove going. And when some of the great chilled hip-hop kicked in (“Make It” is a perfect example), the experience has fully taken hold. Download: N/A
