At a recent gig at Los Angeles' hip Temple Bar, funk/jazz/hip-hop/R&B ensemble, The Square Egg gathered on stage as though they were about to perform a theatrical production.
While Lee, the lead singer, peaked out from underneath his hat and began the show with the loud get-up tune “We Can (Have A Good Time),” the group’s diva back-up singers, Kristen Maxfield and Carol Brevard-Stern, showed their enthusiasm with their soulful groove and ear-to-ear smiles. By the end of the first song, everyone was ready to get down with a melodic rendition of the late Rick James' “Mary Jane.” The band consisting of ten extraordinary musicians, was uplifted as Lee spiced up the act with an accelerated version of Pharcyde’s “She Keeps On Passing Me By.” The horn trio - Jim Antonucci on the sax, Pete Clagett playing trumpet, and Rick Parker on the trombone - experimented with a little James Brown action. Jim then broke out into a breathtaking seven-minute solo performance that left the audience in awe. The stand-up ensemble can only be described as a mixture of flavors; funk, jam band, soul, hip hop, and spoken word. The Square Egg is raw and real with the ability to allow the music to speak for itself. It was the group’s first time playing on the west coast and, hopefully, it won’t be their last.
