hip-hop reviews The flood gates have been forced open as the surge of Tony Robbins inspired rappers invade the air waves spewing their get rich quick schemes while airing out their dirty laundry. If you like listening to grown men prattle on about shiny things and weight increments that would get the common man’s property searched and seized, then by all means help yourself to a heaping helping of Yo Gotti – you might like it.

The aptly titled Back 2 Da Basics brings absolutely nothing new to the table. As the formula would have it, take a street hustler from North Memphis and let him enlighten you as to how much rock he’s pushed to get that scraper on twenty two’s.

Inspiring to some, “I Got Them” (featuring Cash Money Millionaires, Lil’ Wayne and Baby) is probably supposed to be the trunk banger, but aside from Lil’ Wayne’s Carter flow, there is not much in the way of creativity.

“Cold Game” and “25 To Life” are your slices of life pieces where Yo Gotti paints a picture of life in the hood. To Yo Gotti’s credit, he holds the track down solo, but it becomes hard to tell if these are tales designed to scare the youth straight or tales that only aim to establish a legend like the chupacabra.

Lumped together in the middle of this opus to the money focused, Yo Gotti speaks on the matters of the heart. On “That’s Not Yo B***h”, Yo Gotti gets personal as he schools his listeners on the follies of ‘wifing’ trifling, money-mongering women. The hook is simple and repetitive…“Shawty Violating (Wup That Hoe)” - think “Hustle & Flow.”It’s an anthem, but not really that catchy.

There really isn’t much else I can say about this product. “Gangsta Party” is by far the most solid track on the album if not for the veteran savvy and developed stylings of Bun B and 8 Ball. “We Gonna Be Alright” is a heartfelt track, but overall this album is wack. I honestly feel dumber for listening to it.
