R&B Soul reviews Dreey-C’s self-titled effort is a solidly middle ground release. In other words, while it doesn’t stand out from the pack it does at least show that the artist knows what he’s doing.

Hip-hop tinged R&B is a genre it’s far too easy to sound self-parodious performing if the right balance isn’t struck. The artist that doesn’t have the right knack can end up making himself sound ridiculous instead of sexy or cool or whatever. Dreey-C does avoid that, thankfully.

The melodies for the songs are handled well and are quite listenable and the beats that fuel them mix well and show that competent DJing is involved here. The textures are well-done without being either too sparse or too dense, giving the perkier tunes lightness without sacrificing energy or musical substance. Also, Dreey-C’s album is a good blend of slower seduction music and dancier numbers, providing a healthy amount of variety.

Dreey-C also doesn’t exactly sound like anybody else but at the same time fits solidly into the mainstream of his chosen genre, proving that he can perform a chosen style without having to emulate a specific musical hero. Thanks to good and sometimes great melodies, accomplished vocal work, the right DJing and well-done if not heroic songwriting, Dreey-C can be pleased with this release.
