Strange Fruit Project - The Healing PDF Print E-mail

hip-hop reviews A thorough, feel-good album is a rare oddity these days. It’s especially ironic coming from a group of emcee’s named after the 1939 beautifully tragic hit single, “Strange Fruit.” Maybe irony is what the Strange Fruit Project hopes to arouse in their third album The Healing. Whatever the case, every song is laced together with an uplifting sense of strength and pride.

Myth, Myone, and Symbolic One (S1) have an unsurpassable talent of not only connecting with the music, but also with each other. With internal producer, S1, the harmonious flow between the beat and the lyrics is amazing. “Ready Forum” will have you nodding your head, while producer Illmind mixes up an 80’s pop song in ”Good Times” that is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor.

Erykah Badu blesses the album on “Get Live” over a space age backdrop, reminiscent of Aesop Rock. The fusion of soul, funk and hip-hop is at its peak in "Special." SFP and Thesis rekindle the spirit of Badu’s unforgettable 1997 hit "On and On" in “Soul Clap.”

The Healing would sound just as voluptuous without the overloaded featured artists by Deloach, Toby, and Darien Brockington but you can’t blame them for trying. However, the blend of guest producers, such as Jake One, 9th Wonder, and Illmind, makes this strange fruit worth tasting!

As innovative as Outkast and Madvillain, yet as down to earth as The Roots and Foreign Exchange, the Strange Fruit Project is irrefutably the next big thing in hip-hop and The Healing is proof.
