While most associate DJ Spinna with hip-hop, his musical palette ranges from funk to techno to jazz to house to soul to break-beat to reggae. Intergalactic Soul is bursting at the seams with blends of hip-hop and dance beats. Does it really work out as well as DJ Spinna had planned?

For starters, after listening to the album in several different settings, it seemed to fit best on the drive home after work on Friday evening. Sticking to his guns on “Current Events” and “Intergalactic Soul,” the hip-hop beats are cool and laid back with mellow synthesizing.
N’Dea Davenport asks “Where’s Your Love?” to Spinna’s staggering Euro-lounge thump and jazzy overtones. Following up, the Free Radicalz banter about a “sticky love affair.” If Prince and Bobby Brown had a love child in the form of a pop song, “Outta Time” would be its name.
As the ride home comes to an end, it’s time to get ready to go out and celebrate the end of another long week. DJ Spinna is on point as Intergalactic Soul progressively speeds up to keep up with the mood of his listeners.
Stephanie McKay’s dense yet feminine vocals over DJ Spinna’s heavy bass, light drums, and chirping birds in “Peace and Quiet” is the most impressive collaboration on the album. This is the last track to listen to before heading out for the evening. Spinna and Eric Roberson confidently serenade you with “Butterfly Girl” as you walk into the gentle radiance of night.
In “Computer Love,” Spinna pays his respect to the godfathers of Electronica, Kraftwerk. One of only two instrumental tracks on the album, it offers a nice opportunity to jam to an old school track.
The monotonous lyrics on “Could It Be Too Soon,” featuring Lizz Fields, are discouraging, which is a shame considering the beat is hot! But there’s only so many “oooh-wooo-oooh’s” you can stand before you have to move it along.
Tortured Soul’s style, sounding similar to Eagle-Eye Cherry and Lenny Kravitz, compliments Spinna’s jazzy dance tempo beautifully in “Show Us.”
In “Living My Life,” DJ Spinna and singer Trish Angus have reached the other side of the spectrum; pure house, dance beats. While it boldly stands out, it truly enables the album to reach out to everyone.
Free Radicalz return as the last featured vocalists on the album. They part ways with “Bye Bye Bye,” a tune that very well could have been the hidden track on Prince’s Purple Rain.
DJ Spinna covers a lot of territory in seventy minutes. If you can keep track of Prince’s name, you can keep up with Spinna on Intergalactic Soul.
