Now let’s get this straight. Pimp C’s Pimpalation ain’t gonna rock your world or anything, but it will give you some nice grooves to cruise to when the mood strikes.

Pimp C does provide some fairly groovy hip-hop to dig into. One of the real strengths of Pimp C’s work is the DJ work and sampling. First, the textures are solid and bring hook to the tunes. The sampling is also wisely chosen (including “I’m Free,” which mixes in Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” – it’s a good, representative track if you wanna know what Pimp C’s all about) and is worked into the total mix quite nicely. These are hip-hop anthems, with plenty of guest appearances, that will serve to get your head bobbin' and your speakers rocking. It’s not exceptional. It doesn’t raise the bar. But Pimpalation is an enjoyable addition to the hip-hop canon. Fusing the textures and hook of competent DJ efforts with good vocal talent, Pimp C has managed to put together a workable release.
