Atmospheric, dark and grimey are a few choice words to describe this seminal band's latest opus, Game Theory. The return of Malik B. wasn't enough to warn fans about the fire this release brings. Each track effortlessly leads to the next, giving the impression of one long, exquisite jam session.

The charged up gansta "Here I Come" finds drummer Questlove going off on the skins like his freakin' life depended on it, while the gritty "In The Music" is a f**k you to all those who say The Roots need this-and-that to sell more records. Stronger than 2004's Tipping Point, the set raises the woefully low bar while slapping fake rap satrs in the face with the hip-hop gauntlet. The boys end the 13-track journey with a moving track produced by, and dedicated to, the late J Dilla. The cut expertly mirrors the innovative energy that was/is Dilla and remains as The Roots. RIP Jay Dee.
Booty, paper-chasing rappers may come and go, but time is just starting to prove solid hip-hop craft equals immortality in the the hearts and souls of music lovers. Cop.
