Trae’s Restless is a bit baffling. It’s one of those CDs you just have no reaction to. It’s not bad so as to be laughable. But it doesn’t grab either.

What makes it such a mystery is that the CD has plenty of atmospherics (its atmosphere is, well, dark, it’s ominous and threatening and exists in the nighttime shadows) and well-executed DJ work with good texturing and decent grooves. There is a little bit of “creeper” effect to this one, in that it slowly seeps into you, sinking its hooks in, but slowly and not very deep.
The rapwork is admirably lithe and athletic verbally, sometimes hitting surprising speed. There will be those out there who are grabbed; obviously music functions in a very subjective world, and sometimes something either gets you, or it doesn’t. In the end all I can really do is speculate that Trae and I just don’t have anything to connect with through the music. For others, I’m sure it’ll be different.
