While Fat Beat Records usually pumps out some amazing talent, Act Your Waist Size is just another fast-produced, mass-produced attempt at progressive hip-hop. And like the saying goes, if ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. It’s true that simple is the latest trend, however, there is a big difference between naturally-simplistic and overtly-complex-simplistic. With so much lyrical talent, it’s distracting listening to the Count over monotonous beats (i.e. “Tradin’ Whore Stories” and “Junkies”). The elevator-lounge vibe in “Half the Fun” is the only balanced song that negates everything just said. The Count isn’t even the star of the song. Producer Van Hunt mixes a chill ass beat with an “orgasmic” comedic chorus keeping you on your toes. “Pot/Liquor,” featuring Kid Captain Coolout and Oriana Lee has a storytelling flow over a smooth, jazzy beat. Once again, however, how many times can you hear “Always smoking blunts and gettin’ drunk” and it still sound original?
The twenty tracks could have been reduced to, I don’t know, maybe, ten. Maybe. If for nothing else, check out a couple tracks on Act Your Waist Size to compare to the Count’s debut, Pre-Life Crisis, a strictly live instrumentation album. Download: “Half the Fun”
