It is possible to hurt your neck with this one, so be careful. Practice your handstand to get balance and build up your neck muscles.

Description #1

Ok, in order to do this move you need confidence, back and neck strength and understanding of physics. There are 2 important things you need to know: 1, the faster you are, the more balance you have, don't make me explain the physics of it, just trust me. You'll understand what I mean by the end of step two anyway. I'll explain the second thing later...

[1] Find your 'sweet spot' on your head, this is where you'll be spinning. You find this by just standing on your head, positioning and repositioning yourself until you find a spot where you're comfortable. You should be able to rest on your sweet spot for 5-10 seconds without your hands before moving on and be comfortable in the position.

[2] Alright, by this time you'll already be comfortable with the feeling of your neck lodged into your back and the blood rush to your head, if not, go back to step one. Now, get up into a headstand, wind your legs back in the opposite direction you want to spin and WHIP (not kick) them as hard as you possibly can and close your legs (this will give you more speed and hence more balance, like I was saying before).  Work with this until your get 1-1/2 to 2 rotations. This will be the most difficult and time consuming part of learning this move. You'll learn that the faster you go the less you have to worry about balance and that it'll only hurt the first 5 times or so.

[3] Once you've got about 2 spins down with decent speed, try and open your legs, catch yourself by tapping the ground and then kick again.  Kicking again is tricky, because you don't kick at first. The fact that your upper body will stop moving but your legs won't will kind of drain the last of the speed you have, and THEN you'll feel this kind of gap right before your body is pulled again by the extra force, and that is when you kick. You'll probably want to keep your legs open for the extra style once you've got the spped you need. The added momentum will give you a lot of speed, and before long you'll have a lot of rotations down.

[4] Now, you don't want to have to keep tapping and kicking forever, so after about 4 or 5 times, you can use the tuck method. Now for that extra bit of physics. The reason you go faster with your legs closed as opposed to open is your turning radius is smaller and so you have the same force applied over a smaller area when your legs are together. So, once you have a lot of speed with your legs open, you can kind of cheat physics. When you're spinning with your legs open, you have a lot of force moving your body over a large turning radius. But when you pull your legs together and bend your knees, your turning radius is reduced significantly, and the force you have moves much faster over the smaller radius. So all you need to do is tuck your body for 2 or 3 rotations and you'll gain speed, and then for some reason which I don't understand, when you open your legs again, you'll have a lot more momemtum. This way, it is possible to spin on your head perpetually without having to kick again, and this is how people are able to pull off those amazingly long headspins.

Description #2

[1] Do a handstand, so that your feet are in the air and you're using both your hands for support. Practice this and make sure you can stay up for a long time. Then try moving around in a circle by "walking" on your hands.

[2] Move your legs as far apart as you're comfortable with. Twist your hips in the opposite direction that you want to spin in.

[3] Twist your hips back in the direction you want to spin in and bring your legs together in a circular motion to get momentum. You can also push off with your hands to help with speed.

[4] This should give you anywhere from half a rotation to a full rotation at first. Once you're spinning your hands come off the floor and you use them for balance.

[5] You could leave it at that, but once you've got to a full rotation and you want to keep going, you bring your hands down and push off again.

A smooth surface is essential. You can wear a hat if you don't want to mess with your head.
