It’s a shame that this album took so long to be released to the public. At the height of its creation, between 1995 and 1997, Darc Mind’s Symptomatic Of A Greater Ill would have been an immediate classic.
The authenticity of Symptomatic... becomes more obvious with MC Kevroc’s deep voice and DJ GM Webb D’s dark cinematic beats. “Visions of a Blur” introduces listeners to the political views of Darc Mind over a mellow beat. That familiar sound in “Seize the Phenom” takes you back to hip-hop-pop of the late 80’s. The stretched-out jazzy tempo and the upbeat rhythmic flow of Kevroc’s delivery will take you back to the days of KRS-One, Ultramagnetic MC’s, and De La Soul. “I’m Ill” gives props to Nas’, than just released album, Illmatic with its sample of “It Ain’t Hard to Tell.” Kevroc’s clever word-play is complete with directions to apply medication or is he explaining how to rhyme? Hmmm, makes you think. The cinematic feel of the album is at its peak in “Covert Op,” a track about the hidden agenda of the U.S. government. The mysterious beat, reminiscent of James Bond, and Kevroc’s voice exerts a spooky state of urgency. Webb D mixes a light jazzy beat with flutes, snare drums, and keyboards and scratches it up with a little “half man, half amazing,” in “Give Me Time.” The hook is questionable, (i.e. “hook you like Frasier...”) but the beat can’t be messed with. The breakbeats in “Bmoc (Beautiful Man of Color)” and “Fever Pitch” bleed in to the innovative hip-hop of the millenium found in “Rhyme Zone.” Wrapping up the album is a definite hit single, “Outside Looking In.” Download: “Visions of a Blur” “I’m Ill” “Outside Looking In”
