The kind of melody construction I hear on this disc is something I find a little surprising. It's a hint at retro mixed with post modern and the flavors are the sort of thing I'd expect to find utilized on a downtempo electronica album. It's pretty, laid back, surprisingly gentle and surprisingly effective music to put behind the talented hip-hop stylings of Kenn Starr. And this gets us to the restraint.
The audio constructions on this disc are sometimes totally in harmony with the musings of Starr, but sometimes his words and meaning wax aggressive and it becomes an interesting juxtaposition between what's being said and the sweet, lulling nature of the music. Sometimes the instrumental elements make sense in a mainstream way, but sometimes they seem an unexpected choice – but it works. From soul to elements of downtempo chillout electronica, Starr has wisely chosen rich and rewarding cool grooves to fuel his subtly energetic lyricism.
