Let's see, there's Ghetto Mafia, Outkast, Youngbloodz, Ying Yang Twins
did I miss anyone? Kriss Kross? No matter, there’s another duo of
Georgians serving up bass heavy southern twang music to the rest of the
civilized world. Oh, I'm just talking about Da Backwudz and their
debut commercial offering (read ‘something for the kids to ride to’),
Wood Work.
First things first,
Milwaukee Black's collection of sample loops, single handedly elevated
this album from cookie cutter product to diamond in the rough status.
He had his hand in producing cuts off the album like the single, “You
Gonna Luv Me,” the Oompa Loompa inspired, “I Don’t Like The Look Of It”
and the ironically sampled Bob Marley bit in “Make Money Counting
Hundreds."

Cliché.
At times, Da Backwudz come off as a hybrid rap group. Picture a cross
between Outkast circa Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and K-Ci &
JoJo circa any of their live show. “I’ll Do” is weak, “Fantastic” is
good and “Feelin’ Lonely” is negligible. Despite a guest shot from the
atomic dog, George Clinton, “Smoke N Ride” ditches the funk for spaced
out hood stoner music. Keeping in mind that Wood Work is Da Back
Wudz's first contribution to the hip-hop collective, rookie mistakes
are expected.
Wood Work starts off brilliantly with “Welcome 2 Da Backwudz.” I didn’t
have an urge to hit the skip button until about midway through the
album. Big Gipp shines bright on the struggle and survive track,
“Whatcha Know Bout My Life.”
There are a healthy amount of guest appearances on the album such as
Killer Mike, Sleepy Brown, Caz Clay, Bohagon and Jeff B; however, not
every cameo was a jewel. I hope management behind Da Backwudz saved
their receipt for Nas' half assed southern flow on the remix to “You
Gonna Luv Me.”
Initially, Wood Work came off as a polished debut but upon further
inspection, I found the album to be shallow and lacking in replay
value. Regardless of where you hail from and how you speak, music is
music and Wood Work leaves plenty of room for improvement.
