Riddle me this. How many
emcees does it take to spark the interest of an already attention
deficient hip-hop audience? In the case of Army of the Pharaohs – The
Torture Papers, Jedi Mind Tricks, apparently, puts stock into
assembling a roster of about twelve vocalists to keep the ears
percolating and the heads nodding.
Is
anyone listening yet? Probably not, but through solid production and
gritty lyical performances, anyone who chooses to burn some brain cells
may actually come to like The Torture Papers.

Jedi Mind Tricks
enlisted the talents of dark horse, underground veterans the likes of
Esoteric, Celph Titled and…well, there’s Vinnie Paz… The Torture Papers
is ripe with no namers firing at your synapses in an attempt to be
heard by the masses. There are little to no “oh yeah I’ve heard of that
guy” types. If you haven’t already guessed, The Torture Papers is what you might call backpacker fodder.
Read
nothing into backpacker, however. Although there are no club bangers
and or clap happy hooks, the Army of Pharaohs put together a project
that breathes depth like a comic book series. There is a mood and theme
established throughout the compilation. Hungry, war mongering emcees
sound off without restraint on “Battle Cry” – the art of posse cuts
revisited.
Unlike other more commercial oriented offerings,The Torture Papers
utilizes every second of air time, often sparing the hook to allow an
emcee to display his lyrical prowess. Celph Titled, Apathy and
Planetary absolutely assault the left side of the brain on “Torture
Papers.” “Into the Arms of Angels” deviates from the intensity
slightly, reflecting on more sensitive matters such as dead beat dads.
Every track is worth listening purely on the strength of the lyrical
content. The subject matter may not appease the appetites of listeners,
who only wish to be entertained without being challenged.
It is abundantly clear, Jedi Mind Tricks is presenting Army of the Pharaohs – The Torture Papers not to the average listener but to the hip-hop proletariat who care not about packaging and buzz names. It’s an acquired taste.
