Talib Kweli - Right About Now - The Official Sucka Free Mix CD PDF Print E-mail
Written by Franklin Grimes

hip-hop reviews If ASCAP numbers reflected the viewership of the masses like the Nielsen ratings, Talib Kweli would probably rank alongside the socially conscious programming of KCET. Despite truly keeping it real to the hip hop culture and garnering the respect of commercial kingpins the likes of 50 Cent and Jigga Jay-Z, Talib Kweli struggles to solidify his niche in the hearts of hip-hop’s latest generation of heads.

Right About Now… is a shout in the dark – “I’m still here and I’m not going anywhere.”

Matter of fact, the very first track ("Right About Now") on this ...Sucka Free Mix CD plays like an audible resume, narrating how deep Talib Kweli’s roots are connected into the game. From the up and coming in Papoose ("The Beast") to the hottest commodity in the hip-hop community in Mighty Mos Def ("Supreme, Supreme"), respect amongst his peers allows this cook up project to shine like a quarter on the backseat floor of your car.

"Drugs, Basketball & Rap" combines the methodical composition of Kweli with the hard spitting, ice grilling flows of the west coast underground pallbearers, Planet Asia and Phil Da Agony to drop knowledge on the youth and ignorant – “Niggaz getting caught in a trap/For the cash it’s the drugs, basketball or the rap/There’s more to us than that…”

Adding a little needed color to the mix CD, MF Doom makes yet another comic book cameo appearance on "Fly That Knot" forcing Kweli to step outside of his accustomed style of flow. Kweli’s protégé, Jean Grae, is featured with her single, "Where You Gonna Run."

"Ms. Hill," however, is far and away the most provocative track on the mix CD. Ever the beacon of consciousness, Talib Kweli lyrically hosts an intervention in hopes to sway the Fugees’ most identifiable and arguably most talented member, Lauryn Hill, who some have considered her ego to have gone over the deep end. Much like Talib’s plea to Lauryn Hill, Right About Now is for the good of the people – easily.
