Substance Abuse - Overproof |

There
are two big things going for Substance Abuse that help this act stand
out from the plethora of hip-hop acts out there vying for your
attention; a perfectly executed eye for what old school rap sounds like
and heaps of dynamics and eclecticism. The listener will find
everything here from chilled out, stoner groove hip-hop for cruisin'
and movin your head and fast-paced stuff that springs up and demands to
be heard. The DJ work and use of samples are perfect for creating hooks
and textures that grab your attention and fill out the sound without
being overly thick or cluttered.

The talent behind the deck
is obvious. The rappers are capable performers, able adjust tone and
delivery depending on the track in question. And, as for the retro
thing, well, that just hits you right from the start, and it's a
tribute to the artists involved (and don't forget collaborations with
Saafir, Kool Keith, Motion Man, Kutmasta Kurt, P.E.A.C.E., Rasco,
Thes-One and MF Doom) that the music embraces so solidly a classic
sound wtihout sounding in the least dated. These tracks range from
lighter-sounding old schoolness to numbers that could have come from
Public Enemy in its heyday. Recommended.
