If
you like the artists A Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli, or Common, then
you will surely give a head bob to Tanya Morgan’s Moonlighting. And
although the music world would welcome a new female rapper in the game,
this group is comprised of three talented male lyricists and a
producer, Von Pea, Don Will, Ilyas, and Brickbeats hailing from
Brooklyn and Cincinnati. And although some may think this is a new
group, they are not exactly "fish out of water.” They got their start
as a group in 2003, working the underground hip-hop scene just as many
of hip-hop’s greatest contributors like Biggie, Tupac, and Jay-Z.

From sick beats, to hooks
sure to capture your attention in between anticipating their raw
verses, this album is one that has major potential to take beyond the
streets. This group brings us real creativity, so authentic, that you
would swear you were at a live concert or on the battleground of a
heated freestyle contest. “Take The L” warns all mc’s to bring their
“A-game” and don’t come half-stepping as TM’s game plan is to win and
shed verbal blood. “Hooks” has to be one of the top three hottest songs
on the album as the beat is contagious. It is also nice to be able to
hear the humorous laced tracks and skits throughout the album. “Just
Cause I Got Locks” has a funny feel to it, yet sends a very serious
message of racial profiling, spirituality, and stereotypes.
Although for the most part, the album was an ear-catcher, the song
“Pretty” caught my hand turning down the volume, as the sound was
off-like some 10th grader mixed in the bottom of their basement. And
although the concept of the song was cool, the Bel Biv Devoe borrowed
chorus of the song was not hot! It sounded like someone was singing to
a karaoke screen after drinking too many beers….this for sure could
have been left off the album… at least until they could afford some
decent back up singers.
With
the help of some experienced producers and better vocals, (especially
targeting the latter tracks on the album “Just Cause I Got Locks”
“Rough U Up” and “Pretty”) this group will be ready to be put front
stage and center!
