Well, Sunshine's back, strong and real as ever with Sunshine At Midnight, chock full of tell-it-like-it-is while feeding your hunger for her brand of dark, vulnerable soul. The deceptively cool opener, "Something I Wanna Give You," bounces like a love song, but actually turns out to be Sunshine giving a dud his walking papers while calmly singing "I had to fake it more times than I can count my hands." Lol. Bringing out the velvet glove just to reveal more iron hand lyrics in "My Whole Life," the world weary, pissed North Carolina native invokes the spirit of "Heard It All Before" as she confronts a no good cheating, lying ass for what might be the last time. Later, "Switch It Up" finds her urging ladies not to depend on the man to keep things spicy with, "Don't be afraid to get up and go. Staying at home is getting old." "Good Love" proves Sunshine to be a born and bred pimp as she runs down game to an unsuspecting knucklehead. Despite her delectable taste for evil, when Sunshine's in love she's in love to the core with "Force Of Nature," one of the realest love songs of the new year. When she says "Excuse me y'all, I love his dirty drawers," you can almost smell her sincerity. At a mere 10 tracks, you would think the slightly forgettable set might leave the listener wanting more. But nope. Sunshine's brilliant in her soul searing, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals, but the long-overdue set lacks overall punch, a certain wow factor one craves from a searingly honest songtress. Nevertheless, it's good to have the light back and hopefully album No. 3 won't take another 6 years to be released.
