The first album reflects on the label’s history with Peanut Butter Wolf, as he chose the tastiest twenty-five tracks from an enormous catalog. Starting off the album right with the classic 2003 Jaylib track, “The Red” is a reminder of the late and great J Dilla’s production skills. Remarkable! Madlib mixes James Brown’s classic “The Payback” with Gang Starr’s “Code Of The Streets” to create his own “The Payback.” Now the song (eerily) pays homage to the Godfather of Soul. R.I.P. In “Falling” Dudley Perkins, a.k.a. Declaime, expresses the cruelties of the world, but offers hope to those willing to change. “Don’t you want to go to the moon?/Also, don’t you want to enhance your intelligence?/Don’t you want to stand up for your own?/Don’t you want to see with your own two eyes?/Only you can lift you up,” he inspires. The benefit of signing onto Stones Throw is their open-minded attitude. Take Koushik’s “Be With” for example. His characteristic style is to mix hip-hop with the psychedelic sound of the 60’s, creating a mellow and hazy atmosphere no matter where his music is played. J. Rocc mixes up PBW’s Ten Years on disc two. He adds his own wash, twist, shake, and dry. J. Rocc might not be receiving the credit he deserves, considering the tracks sound nothing like the original version. Stones Throw is infamous for turning the familiar into something completely unlike anything you’ve heard before. Download: the entire album
