Any Devin the Dude fan knows that his music is crude, so it should not be any surprise that this album is NOT made for sensitive ears.
His trashy mouth, however, speaks truths that everyday people are too afraid to say out loud. If you have a sense of humor, Waitin’ To Inhale. will keep you laughing from beginning to end.
Devin is a comedian, first and foremost. He is also a storyteller. He
contemplates how the worth of money has changed over the years in
“Almighty Dollar.” Complaining how people used to only ask to borrow a
dollar and now they ask for three.
The dark melody of “I Hope I Don’t Get Sick-A-This” is almost confusing
in comparison to the hilarious subject matter. He is not ashamed to
admit that he is not one to practice monogamy. He raps, “I started off
horny with a hobby.” Devin doesn’t brag about classy ladies that he
brings home, instead it’s blatant that they are the exact opposite.
One of few tracks to be taken seriously is about what Devin takes
seriously. On “What A Job,” Devin, with Allstars Snoop Dogg and Andre
3000, sing about the difficulties of being a musician. Although they
have different styles of expression, they can still relate about the
unique lifestyle they have chosen.
In “Just Because,” referencing Eminem’s track about killing his
ex-wife, Devin glamorizes torturing and murdering his girlfriend. The
cheesy R & B beat, complete with an out-of-tune saxophone, helps
make light of the situation.
After listening to “Nothin’ To Roll With,” where Devin fakes a country
twang, it’s hard to take his words to heart. He’s a rude Dude, but a
funny Dude. The lyrics of Waitin’ To Inhale are like movies that are watched over and over again, because each time you pick up something new.
Suddenly, the second time around the theme of the album makes sense. Smoking is mentioned at least once in every track, meanwhile “life” is really what goes on while Devin is Waitin’ To Inhale.
