Jill Scott returns with a brazen post-divorce set that takes the listener on an unexpected trip.
Lead single "Hate On Me" has big hairy balls, while "Let It Be" displays the incredible range that won fans over with her classic debut Who Is Jill Scott.
This is all well and good, but the part we weren't expecting, the hyper-sexual tone rampant in tracks such as "Epiphany" sees Scott wax poetic, somewhat, about ejaculation. Somehow the subtlety and wit apparent in previous release are missing here as you drown in the cornyiness (or is it horniness?) of "Come See Me." The good news is, despite the weirdness, The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 is indicative of an artist who still has a lot to offer. One might wish though that the next release is as strong as it's best while progressing away from its worst.
It may not be her best album, but hey chalk it up to the divorce; Scott still runs circles around the majority of R&B singers out there and at her weakest still rocks.
