Busta
Rhymes has come a long way from the back-in-the-day shine of Native
Tongues glory... a long sad way that, after a four year long wait, has
ended in a big messy crash at the bottom of the depths with the
appropriately titled The Big Bang.

Despite awesome production from heavyweights Dr. Dre, Timbaland, the
late, great J. Dilla and cross genre wonderchild will.i.am, Bussa Bus
just can't seem to get his bald head together. Where he was once a hot
emcee with off-the-chain energy, he's now a parody of himself, way
under the bar and full of contradictions. Claiming to be the king of
New York is useless when the best you can bring is the half-hearted
wanna be anthem "New York S***" and why confuse fans with a whack track
like "I’ll Do It All," featuring... Latoya Jackson. WTF?
In fact there are too many guests here, a virtual train running up in
Busta's Holland Tunnel. Sure he was dissed by J Records and we feel his
pain on "They're Out To Get Me" where he says I'm aftermath now, shit's
getting worse/
now when those same "friends" see me goin hard that shit be making 'em
hurt but you can't miss the irony delivered by none other than Q-Tip.
Back in the day, A Tribe Called Quest featured Busta on the uber classic
"Scenario" but now in 2006 the former ATCQ emcee breaks it down on the
Dilla-produced, ironically titled "You Can't Hold The Torch."
"In retrospect, the game ain't the same mane
They heart and soul is divided/
They ramshack the music, no control up inside it.
Now - look at this, it's all stretched out and nasty/
But - lettin money pass me..
I doubt that"
Damn.
It's not all a bend over fest though, with some hot ass beats
underscoring a myriad of cameos including Stevie Wonder (on the searing
"Been Through The Storm"), Marsha (Floetry), Missy Elliot, Swizz Beatz
(who unfortunately raps), the late Rick James, Raekwon, Kelis, Nas and
more. But with the dearth of this eclectic combination of guests, the
absence of cameos from members of Flipmode Squad, and labelmates G-Unit
and the Shady camp speak volumes. The set's Dre produced finale,
"Legend of the Fall Offs," evokes a sonic graveyard vibe while Busta
unwittingly paints a self-portrait:
“Alone in the mirror, you look at
yourself and you smile / disregarding the fact that your run has been
done for a while."
Damn.
