Biography

Big Gates

Plies grew up in Fort Myers, Florida. In 1999, his brother Ronell Lawrence Levatte a.k.a. Big Gates, started Big Gates Records. Levatte served as CEO, while Plies initially developed the label's artists.

Plies initially refused to rap, however after a demonstration for one of his artists, Levatte decided to keep Plies' verse on the track "Tell Dem Krackers Dat". Levatte and Plies promoted the single and traveled many times to Miami, which eventually led to a deal for Plies on Slip-N-Slide Records.[2]

After the success of "Tell Dem Krackers Dat", Big Gates Records would go on to release two more Plies mixtapes, including "36 Ounces" and "100% Real Nigga".

The Real Testament

The Real Testament was released on August 7, 2007. His debut single "Shawty" featuring T-Pain topped the Hip Hop charts and became one of the most played songs via radio in the nation.[3] "Shawty" went on to chart at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. He later released his second single, "Hypnotized" featuring Akon. The third single from his debut album was "I Am the Club." The album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

Definition of Real

Plies has released his second album, Definition of Real, on June 10, 2008, 10 months after releasing his first album. The first official single was "Bust It Baby Pt. 2", featuring Ne-Yo. It topped the hip hop charts, also beating his other single, "Shawty", as the best single up to date for Plies. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, selling 214,902 copies its first week.

Present

Plies launched a Bust It Baby reality show to find a woman of his dreams. Hundreds of women turned out in Tampa, Florida to audition for the reality show. He is currently in talks to bring the show to television, and three major networks are currently bidding for the rights to air it.

Plies has reported on his second album, that he will be releasing another album in December. It will be called The Realest. The album should be released on December 16, 2008.[4]

Arrest

On 2006-07-02 a shooting at a Gainesville, Florida nightclub saw Plies charged with illegal possession of a concealed weapon, and members of his entourage charged with attempted murder. The shooting, in which 5 people were injured, started after Plies' microphone was cut off for Lil' Boosie to perform, after Plies' performance ran over time. According to the promoter Jonathan Smith, Plies became "enraged", and the resulting fist fight ended with the shooting.[5]
