Flo Rida (born Tramar Dillard) is an American rapper. He was born in Opa-locka, Florida but raised in Carol City. As a teenager, he toured with local rap group 2 Live Crew.[1][2] Later, he appeared in numerous popular rap mixtapes, most notably in We the Best by DJ Khaled in 2006, when he was signed to the Poe Boy Entertainment label, distributed by Atlantic Records. Mail on Sunday was Flo Rida's solo debut album; its lead single "Low" was a number-one hit for 10 weeks in early 2008.[2]
CareerAs a teenager, Dillard worked with local rap group 2 Live Crew and formed his own amateur group with some friends called the Groundhoggz. His work with 2 Live Crew member Fresh Kid Ice attracted attention of DeVante, a member of the band Jodeci. However, he was rejected by several of the major labels, so he sought several other jobs outside of music and briefly attended the University of Las Vegas (where he played basketball) and Barry University. He returned to his home state of Florida to continue pursuing his music career after receiving a phone call from a representative of the independent label Poe Boy Entertainment.[1] Dillard signed with Poe Boy in 2007, and began affiliating himself with other Florida rappers, such as Rick Ross, Trina, and Trick Daddy. A promotional street single entitled "Birthday", featuring Rick Ross, was his first significant release. He would make his mainstream debut with the song "Bitch I'm from Dade County" on DJ Khaled's album We the Best.[2]
Mail On SundayHis breakthrough came with his debut single, "Low", featuring T-Pain. It was the first official single off of his album Mail On Sunday and the first single off the movie soundtrack Step Up 2 Tha Streets. The single remained #1 on the Billboard 100 for 10 weeks. His second official single is "Elevator", featuring Timbaland. It received early airplay in the urban and pop radio and peaked #16 on the Billboard 100. His third official single is "In the Ayer", featuring will.i.am. It peaked #38 on the Billboard 100 and currently playing on BET and MTV.
OtherIn June 2008, Michelle Williams released "We Break the Dawn" featuring Flo Rida. The song is currently climbing the Hot Dance Club Play, US Billboard Hot Dance Airplay and US Billboard Hot Singles Sales charts. Dillard will be performing at the 2008 MMVAs (MuchMusic Video Awards).[3] He performed for the June 19th, 2008, episode of the reality dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance. He is also touring as a special guest on Timbaland's Shock Value Tour along with Keri Hilson on the 18th of July in New Zealand's Vector Arena in Auckland.
