R&B Soul reviews Grimey, raw, pure and exciting are just some of the adjectives that can be used to describe Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Brothers, a compilation showcasing some of the finest never-heard 60s and early-70s tracks from Atlantic Records' male roster.

Compiled by the self-proclaimed "British Ambassador of Soul," David Nathan, this set gets a powerful start with the first-time release of "Can't Stop A Man In Love" from the late, great Wilson Pickett. This track was later recorded by fellow legend, Bobby Womack, who just happens to follow this track with "How Does It Feel," an equally effective UK B-side previously unavailable in the U.S. Other gems include the deeply soulful "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" by icon Otis Redding, the heartfelt "Baby, Baby, Baby" crooned by Percy Sledge (and originally sung by Aretha Franklin), the guttural shout of "You Left The Water Running" by the incomparable Sam & Dave and the heartbreaking "Coldest Days Of My Life" by the then polio-stricken Walter Jackson.

And if it couldn't get any better, R.B. Greaves' version of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" is almost guaranteed to knock the unsuspecting to the floor, while the jaw-dropping "Change With The Seasons" from high tenor Carl Hall might put more hair on your head.

Despite a couple yawners, this excellent collection is quality from tip to top, and is beautifully ended with the scintillating worldwide debut of the late Donny Hathaway's "What A Woman Really Means." Perhaps I'm a sucker for a sweet talking man, but this fiery CD spoke more to me than its female companion Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Sisters. However, Nathan does an excellent job at introducing these gems to the new millennium, and either disc is worthy of continual rotation in your player.
