Some of the melody and sampling herein relies on old school jazz and funk flaves, which, combined with the often chilled but infectious grooves, makes for an engaging and hypnotic listen. Adding to the disc's ability to suck you in are the insertions of non-instrumental, pure spoken word tracks, putting on display MC Ise Lyfe's masterful lyricism.
His poetic ability also informs the hip-hop tracks, in a way bringing together two subtly different forms of spoken word. Applying straight hip-hop, spoken word, interesting interlude tracks, strong social opinions, jazz and funk and more modern (for lack of a better word) hip-hop elements, and a dark and serious atmosphere brings the music a level of musical intelligence that's hard to ignore.
Employing ideas that involve rising above both real and perceived (or self-inflicted) situations and doing so with a satirical use of sometimes blunt gangsta rap lyrical violence (though this is low in tone versus the sort of brutal hardcore rap that comes to mind when the "gangsta" term is used) makes a forceful point in an entertaining way. Subtle, but frank, technique and talented vocal and DJ work produce a compelling and worthwhile hip-hop release that deserves to break through.
Check out "Beautiful Poem," a spoken word piece and "Beautiful," into which it segues, for a sample of the strong artistry on display here.
