Tuesday, 31 May 2005

hip-hop news50 Cent, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Mariah Carey, Will Smith and Snoop Dogg, will join music icon Stevie Wonder and a host of artists around the world for Live 8, the 21st century continuation of Bob Geldof's 1985's historic relief concert Live Aid.

On July 2, Live 8 will take place in five cities silmultaneously. London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin and Rome will host the free concerts.

Performers include Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, U2 and Joss Stone at London's Hyde Park; 50 Cent, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Will Smith, and P. Diddy at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Lauryn Hill and others Craig David at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate; Craig David and Jamiroquai at a Paris venue to be announced; and a host of other artists at Rome's Circus Maximum.

Unlike Live Aid, the concerts are not intended to raise funds but will draw attention to Africa's debt, aid and trade issues.

"Here we are again," Geldof said. "[Live 8] is a unique opportunity for Britain to do something unparalleled in the world and at the beginning of the 21th century, and that is to tilt the world a little bit on its axis in favor of the poor."

As previously reported, Live 8 is scheduled to coincide with the arrival of world leaders for the G8 summit to be held July 6-8 in Gleneagles, Scotland.

The BBC will host the worldwide telecast and facilitate local feeds in various countries. The shows will also broadcast live on the Internet through AOL.
